The European Union will insist on fulfilling its obligations to provide $50bn in aid to Ukraine from the frozen assets of the Russian Central Bank, regardless of the US decision.

This was stated by the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell, Bloomberg reports.

Currently, the Group of Seven agreement on the use of revenues from immobilised Russian assets has faced delays as Washington seeks more reliable guarantees that the EU will be able to resume sanctions measures despite Hungary's opposition.

The US wants to make sure that the plan to provide Kyiv with $50bn is implemented before it is approved by Congress.

‘We will do everything we can to support Ukraine, regardless of the decisions in Washington,’ Borrell said before a meeting of EU foreign ministers on 29 August.

The diplomat stressed that ‘Ukraine needs to increase its defence capabilities, and it needs it now’.

Borrell also said that he was looking for a way to ‘get around’ Hungary's resistance to the allocation of another €6 billion to Ukraine, as previously discussed by EU members.
