The Russian Military Court of Appeal has increased the sentence of marine Dmytro Yevgan to 23.5 years in a maximum security prison.
This was reported by MIPL with reference to the prisoner of war's wife, Valentyna.
The decision to increase the sentence from 20 to 23.5 years in prison was made on 28 August by the Military Court of Appeal in Moscow Region.
It is noted that Dmitriy joined the court hearing via video link from Detention Centre No. 3 in Novocherkassk, Rostov Region. The prosecutor requested an increase in the sentence.
Valentyna noted that the appeal hearing took place very quickly. Currently, the convicted marine, who defended Mariupol in the spring of 2022, is being held in a pre-trial detention centre in Novocherkassk.
The motivational part of the verdict has not yet been announced. After it is prepared, the case should be returned to the Southern District Military Court, and then the decision should be sent to the pre-trial detention centre. Within two months, the convict may be transferred to a penal colony in the Russian Federation.
During the battles for Mariupol, Dmytro lost his arm and was later taken prisoner. Despite the fact that he is a severely wounded fighter and will no longer be able to continue fighting, he was convicted and is not being returned from captivity.
The case of Dmytro Yevgan
- On 12 April, Dmytro Yevgan was among those captured by Russians at the Ilyich Iron and Steel Works.
- At the end of April, the first videos of the captured Mariupol defenders appeared. They were held almost 100 kilometres from the city in the occupied village of Molodizhne in penal colony No. 120, better known as Olenivka.
- At the end of May 2022, a new video with Dmytro appeared on Russian telegram channels. In it, the man admits that he and his comrades killed a Russian prisoner. Presumably, he said this to contact his family.
- In July 2022, another video of Dmytro appeared. The Russian prisoner whom Yevgan confessed to killing actually survived.
- For some time, Dmytro was held in the occupied Donetsk Region. Due to poor nutrition and constant beatings, the marine lost a lot of weight and developed ulcers on his legs.
- Dmytro Yevgan was charged under several articles of the Russian Criminal Code: training for terrorist activities, violent seizure of power, attempted murder with particular cruelty for political or ideological reasons, and the use of prohibited methods of warfare.
