The Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Policy and International Cooperation has appealed to the Great State Hural of Mongolia, the country's legislative body, to have the authorities execute a binding international arrest warrant and transfer Russian President Vladimir Putin to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, the chairman of the committee Oleksandr Merezhko told LB.ua.
The committee stressed that Mongolia's achievements on the path to building a democratic society, including the country's steady rise in The Democracy Index, are noteworthy.
"Ukraine is also taking important steps towards integration into the international legal community. In particular, on 21 August 2024, Ukraine ratified the Rome Statute, joining Mongolia, which did so on 11 April 2002. The Rome Statute is a key international treaty that established the International Criminal Court. This document is the basis of global efforts to strengthen the rule of law and prevent impunity, in particular for war crimes," the MPs said in a statement.
On 17 March 2023, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin. He is accused of illegally deporting children from the occupied territories of Ukraine to the Russian Federation during the war.
"The abduction of Ukrainian children is just one of the many crimes for which Putin and the rest of the military and political leadership of the Russian Federation must face justice. As members of the Ukrainian parliament, we call on the Mongolian authorities to execute the binding international arrest warrant and transfer the head of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, to the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Please accept the assurances of our highest consideration and we hope for your support," the MPs added.
