The UN Security Council has approved the text of the resolution proposed by the United States on the third anniversary of the full-scale war, which does not name Russia as the aggressor, does not use the word "war" and does not specify the characteristics of the peace the authors call for.
According to Ukrinform, the resolution, unlike the version that was voted on during the UN General Assembly, does not take into account amendments from European states that contained the word "invasion", added a clause supporting the territorial integrity of Ukraine, and described the desired peace as just.
It consists of only one sentence: "The General Assembly, Mourning the tragic loss of life throughout the Russian Federation-Ukraine conflict, Reiterating that the principal purpose of the United Nations, as expressed in the Charter of the United Nations, is to maintain international peace and security and to peacefully settle disputes, Implores a swift end to the conflict and further urges a lasting peace between Ukraine and the Russian Federation."
Two Russian amendments that would have removed any reference to Russia from the text were also rejected. Nevertheless, Russia voted in favour, as did 9 other countries - the United States, China, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Guyana, Somalia, Pakistan, Panama and Algeria. The United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Greece and Slovenia abstained, so the resolution is considered adopted.
In a speech after the vote, US Ambassador to the UN Dorothy Shea thanked the Security Council members for their support and said it "puts us on the path to peace," the UN website said.
- Previously, the Ukrainian resolution won the vote in the General Assembly by one vote, not the American one.
