The White House, commenting on Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's statement about his readiness to declare a short truce for several days, said that US President Donald Trump wants to see a permanent ceasefire in Ukraine.
Ukrinform reports this with reference to a statement by White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt.
The spokeswoman said that Trump ‘believes he is increasingly disappointed in the leaders of both countries’.
‘He (Trump - ed.) wants to see a permanent ceasefire. As far as I understand it, Vladimir Putin proposed a temporary ceasefire this morning. The president has made it clear that he wants to see a permanent ceasefire first, to stop the killing, to stop the bloodshed,’ the spokeswoman said.
Despite Trump's optimism that he can make a deal, ‘he is also a realist, and both leaders need to come to the table to negotiate a way out of this situation,’ she added.
The spokeswoman added that President Trump's meeting with President Zelenskyy during his trip to the Vatican shows that Donald Trump is putting a lot of effort and time into this because he wants to be a peacemaker president.
‘And it's an incredibly difficult situation and conflict that President Trump inherited from President Biden, who allowed this war to begin, but he (Trump - ed.) is focused on solving this problem,’ Levitt said.
- Today, Moscow announced its decision to declare a 'ceasefire' from 8 to 11 May during the celebrations of the victory in the Second World War, which in Russia is referred to as the 'Great Patriotic War.'
- Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha commented on Russia's announcement of a ceasefire to mark the Victory Day in World War II: if Russia really wants peace, it should stop fire immediately, not wait until 8 May.
