Ukraine launches pre-emptive strikes on Russian airfields and logistics hub ahead of mass attack

A large-scale fire breaks out in Saratov Region.

Ukraine’s Defence Forces have launched a pre-emptive strike against Russia. On the eve of a massive Russian assault, they attacked Russian airfields and other important military facilities, the General Staff reported.

On the night of 6 June, the Defence Forces successfully targeted the Engels airfield in Saratov Region, where aircraft remaining from the Security Service of Ukraine operation are stationed. They also struck the Dyagilevo airfield in Ryazan Region, which hosts aerial refuelling aircraft and escort fighters used in missile strikes on Ukrainian territory and from which Russian strategic bombers are launched.

“In Saratov Region, numerous hits to at least three fuel and lubricant tanks have been confirmed, followed by ignition and a large-scale fire at the facility. The occupiers’ emergency services failed to contain the fire, and significant smoke is visible. Dozens of explosions were recorded in the area of the targets. The results of the damage are being clarified,” the General Staff stated.

In Ryazan Region, there are reports of a fire in the target area. The consequences are still being assessed.

In addition, the Ukrainian Defence Forces targeted several key sites in Russia and the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.

“In particular, a logistics centre of the 30th Motorised Rifle Regiment of the 72nd Motorised Rifle Division of the Russian army was hit near Kulbaki, Kursk Region. The extent of the damage is being clarified. Units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, in cooperation with other components of the Defence Forces, were involved in the operation. Strikes on military infrastructure will continue until the Russian Federation’s armed aggression against Ukraine is fully halted,” the statement said.

  • During the night, the Russian army launched another massive attack on Ukraine, using more than 452 drones and missiles. The Air Force reported that 406 of them were shot down.
  • Earlier this week, the Defence Forces carried out another pre-emptive strike against Russian weaponry. They successfully targeted an Iskander missile system that was preparing to fire on a Ukrainian settlement.
