Ukrainian writer, translator and publicist Sofia Andrukhovych, together with translator Nils Gohanson, has won the International Literature Prize of the Stockholm Cultural Centre and City Theatre, according to the Sweden Herald.
The award was presented for the first volume of the Swedish edition of the novel Amadoka, which was published in Sweden in two parts by Albert Bonniers Förlag — Amadoka I (2024) and Amadoka II (2025). The cover design was created by Trine + Kim Designstudio.
As the jury noted, Sofia Andrukhovych “takes on the daunting task of portraying Ukraine’s painful contemporary history through people, their fragmented and unreliable memories, and fantastical stories.”
The translation by Nils Gohanson was commended for its “almost eerily intuitive Swedish language.”
“This award is very important because it draws attention to Ukraine — to its language, literature and living culture, which continues to exist, speak and be visible even in difficult times,” said Sofia Andrukhovych.
The Ukrainian edition of Amadoka was published in 2020 by Vydavnytstvo Staroho Leva.
