Polish writer and social activist Sylwia Chutnik is embarking on a tour of Ukraine with her novel Furies of Warsaw. The events will take place in three cities — Kyiv, Kharkiv and Lviv — and each will have a distinct focus and format. The meetings are scheduled from 28 February to 2 March.
The novel Furies of Warsaw tells the story of four women who confront injustice on their own terms, protecting one another and other women who turn to them for help. The Ukrainian edition has been published by Lyuta Sprava, translated by historian and publicist Roman Kabachiy, with the support of the House of Europe programme. The events will take place on 28 February at 5 p.m. in Kyiv at Sens Bookstore, on 1 March at 6 p.m. in Kharkiv at ART AREA DK, and on 2 March at 6.30 p.m. in Lviv at the City Museum.
In the capital, the author of the foreword to the Ukrainian edition, Khrystyna Morozova, will join the discussion. The conversation will focus on the feminist dimension of the novel, women’s voices in the metropolis, and reading the book in the context of war, anxiety and daily resilience. Roman Kabachiy will moderate.
In Kharkiv, Sylwia Chutnik will be joined by Yuliya Payevska (Taira), a soldier of the 2nd Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine Khartiya. The discussion will address themes of loss, assistance, female solidarity and the city as a space of danger and mutual support. The event will be moderated by Olena Huseynova.
In Lviv, the writers Sylwia Chutnik and Halyna Kruk will discuss the experiences of Polish and Ukrainian women in large cities, freedom and fear, the right to one’s own voice, and women’s agency in a society undergoing historical and military upheaval. The moderator will be Oksana Dashchakivska.
Admission to all events is free with prior registration. The tour partners are the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Kharkiv, the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Lviv, the Lyuta Sprava publishing house, Sens Bookstore, the Kharkiv LitMuseum, ART AREA DK, and the City Museum (MuMi Lviv).
