This month, the exhibition The Soul of Ukrainian Bakhmut opened at Ukraine House, showcasing contemporary folk art created by artists who were forcibly displaced following the destruction of the city of Bakhmut as a result of Russia’s war. The organisers announced this on their official page.

The exhibition brings together 25 handcrafted pieces — ranging from protective motanka dolls to sculptures made from corn leaves and embroidery. Some of the works have been created using fabrics and clothing salvaged from Bakhmut prior to its destruction, lending the pieces particular emotional and symbolic significance.

Four artists are taking part in the exhibition: Svitlana Kravchenko — textiles and original dolls; Nataliya Romenska — traditional and reinterpreted folk dolls; Tetyana Golts — sculptures made from corn leaves and symbolic compositions; Larysa Azimova — embroidered works featuring amulet motifs.

The project aims to bear witness to the indomitable spirit of eastern Ukraine and to preserve cultural memory through art. The exhibition runs until 12 April 2026 at Ukraine House in Washington
