On 12 May, Ukraine House in Washington will host an evening of contemporary Ukrainian theatre, The Theatre of the Veteran: Voices from Ukraine, featuring a staged reading of the play Balance by Alina Sarnatska. Ukraine House announced this on its Facebook page.

Alina Sarnatska is a veteran, a former combat medic, and one of the most compelling emerging voices in Ukrainian drama. The play Balance tells the story of a female veteran attempting to make sense of her wartime experiences and preserve her identity in a world that appears shattered. It is an intimate and poignant exploration of trauma, motherhood, memory, and the struggle to retain one’s humanity.

The play is based on the author’s personal experience, having served as a combat medic in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, notably in Bakhmut. In her work, Sarnatska explores the realities of war, the role of women in the military, and the complex divide between military and civilian life.

Following the performance, there will be a discussion during which attendees can speak with the author, ask questions, and reflect on the themes presented. The event will be held in support of charitable causes.
