Russia is preparing to import jet fuel from Japan through a network of traders amid a fuel shortage that emerged after strikes on its energy infrastructure.

Reuters reports this, citing sources familiar with the matter.

According to the agency, in the first half of July they plan to ship at least 200,000 barrels of jet fuel from the Japanese city of Chiba.

The cargo will first be delivered to South Korea and then transferred to another tanker that will head to Russia. The transfer is likely to take place at the port of Yeosu.

The tanker’s final destination has not been disclosed.

Russia’s Ministry of Energy did not comment on the information. South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy also declined to comment, while Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has not yet responded to journalists’ request.

According to data from analytics firm Kpler, exports of Russian jet fuel this year have fallen to about 13,000 barrels per day, compared with roughly 30,000 barrels per day last year. Turkey remains the main buyer of Russian jet fuel.
