The 51st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) will host the world premiere of the documentary film «Black Sunflowers» (Black Sunflowers) about Ukrainian youth by American director James Marcus Haney. Sean Penn served as the film’s executive producer, The Hollywood Reporter writes.

«Black Sunflowers» is a feature-length coming-of-age film about Ukrainian youth moving between underground raves and car races and the brutal front line.

In the footage, young Ukrainians confront tragedy and military duty on the front lines. They try to distract themselves on concert dance floors, in relationships, or at a local bar. Haney, together with a Ukrainian film crew, captured a military truck driver racing through city streets on the way home; a young soldier with an amputation who, despite a prosthesis, feels free on the dance floor of an energetic rave; a photographer who shifts from shooting nature to war photography amid the ruins; and a woman learning to fire a rifle.

Haney himself, recalling his first visit to Ukraine, noted how surprised he was by the way Ukrainians live under wartime conditions.

“I was surprised to see how much normal life continues despite the war. I couldn’t shake the thought that the mainstream media were missing half the story,” Haney said in a statement on the TIFF website.

The film’s co-producers are Ukrainians Volodymyr Yatsenko, Anna Yatsenko (ForeFilm), and Yevhenii Zdorovylo.

As a reminder, this year TIFF will also screen the Ukrainian-Dutch film «Patronymic» by Mariia Ponomarova in the TIFF Short Cuts program, as well as the Canadian-Ukrainian film «The Betrayers» by David Bezmozgis in the Centerpiece program.

The festival will run from 10 to 20 September.
