On the night of August 20, the Russian army carried out a massive missile-and-drone strike on Ukraine. The enemy’s main target was the Kyiv region. Russia launched ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, air-launched missiles, loitering munitions and drones. Air defenses neutralized some of the targets.
According to the Air Force, the enemy attacked the Kyiv region with missiles that approach the target on a ballistic trajectory: Oniks, Tsirkon, Iskander-M, and S-400 missiles from the Kursk, Rostov and Bryansk regions. It also launched 36 cruise and air-launched Kh-101/Iskander-K/Kh-59 missiles from the airspace over the Vologda, Kursk and Belgorod regions, 8 Kalibr cruise missiles from Novorossiysk, and two “Banderol” loitering munitions.
It also attacked with 168 Shahed-type strike UAVs (almost half of them jet-powered), Gerbera drones and “Parodiya”-type decoy drones from the following directions: Kursk, Millerovo, Oryol, Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Russia, temporarily occupied Donetsk, and Hvardiiske — temporarily occupied Autonomous Republic of Crimea.
The air attack was repelled by aviation, anti-aircraft missile forces, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units, and mobile fire groups of Ukraine’s Defense Forces.
As of 09:30, air defenses shot down and suppressed 31 Kh-101/Iskander-K/Kh-59 cruise missiles, 8 Kalibr cruise missiles, two “Banderol” loitering munitions, as well as 145 enemy Shahed-type UAVs, Gerbera drones and other types of drones in the north, south, east and center of the country.
Impacts by the enemy’s air attack weapons were recorded at 28 locations, and falling debris at 2 locations.
As of the morning, the attack is ongoing, with several enemy UAVs in the airspace.
- As of the morning of August 20, Kyiv authorities reported 12 people killed and more than 30 wounded. August 21 has been declared a Day of Mourning in the capital.
