The German government will allocate €50 million to restore the New Safe Confinement at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which was damaged by a Russian drone strike in February 2025.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Economy reported this.

“The German government will provide €50 million to restore the New Safe Confinement at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which was damaged by a Russian drone,” the ministry said.

First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal thanked the German government and Federal Minister for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety Carsten Schneider for the funding decision.

“Restoring the confinement is extremely important for ensuring nuclear safety in Ukraine and across Europe,” Shmyhal stressed.

The German funds are expected to be contributed to the International Chornobyl Cooperation Account.

During their visit to the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, the German delegation inspected the New Safe Confinement arch and its infrastructure, as well as a new solar power plant on the Chornobyl industrial site. German representatives also paid tribute to those who took part in the clean-up of the Chornobyl disaster.

The New Safe Confinement was damaged in February 2025 by a Russian drone strike. According to preliminary estimates by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, restoring the structure will cost around €500 million.

Earlier, the European Commission, the United States and Norway also expressed their readiness to contribute to the restoration effort.
