Ukraine and Canada have signed a Joint Statement on deepening energy co-operation. Ottawa will provide Ukraine with C$757 million for emergency gas purchases and stockpiling.
According to the Ministry of Energy, in Calgary First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal took part in a meeting between President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Canada is one of Ukraine’s key partners in energy security, and the strategic areas of co-operation include developing the nuclear fuel cycle, bringing in Canadian technologies for small modular reactors (SMRs), restoring power grids and gas production infrastructure, implementing digital solutions, and strengthening cyber protection for energy facilities.
“We have a strong support package. We are grateful to Canada for its unwavering support for Ukraine and its significant contribution to strengthening our country’s energy resilience,” Denys Shmyhal said.
He said that Canada will provide Ukraine with C$757 million through EBRD programmes to support emergency purchases of natural gas and the build-up of the necessary reserves ahead of winter.
“We welcome the dialogue on long-term LNG supply agreements from Canada to Ukraine,” Shmyhal added.
Canada will contribute a further C$10 million to the Energy Support Fund. This will bring Canada’s total contribution to the Fund to C$100 million.
In addition, Ukraine and Canada will develop strategic co-operation in nuclear energy. In particular, this envisages continued partnership between Energoatom and Cameco on long-term supplies of uranium and conversion services through to 2035.
The Joint Statement also emphasises the importance of continuing co-operation in hydropower, renewable energy and grid resilience.
Export Development Canada is allocating C$200 million to support priority projects in Ukraine, including in hydropower infrastructure. The parties will continue to exchange information and expertise on modernising the power system, hydropower, energy storage technologies, infrastructure reconstruction and improving the resilience of electricity grids.
- Yesterday, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Canada. He later said that Ottawa was providing Ukraine with a support package, but did not specify what it included.
- Today it became known that Canada will provide UAH 1.25 billion in support for Ukrainian veterans and their families.
- The country is also preparing sanctions packages against Russia.
