On the night of 17 September, the Security Service of Ukraine struck three aircraft and three helicopters at the Rostov-Central military airfield in Russia and, together with the Defence Forces, attacked the Yaroslavl oil refinery.

As the SBU reported, the Service carried out a special operation at the Rostov-Central military airfield in Rostov-on-Don, during which it successfully engaged a number of Russian aerial targets.

Long-range drones from the SBU’s Alpha Special Operations Centre struck:

  • An An-12 military transport aircraft;
  • Two An-26 military transport aircraft;
  • Three helicopters.

A large fire with secondary detonations broke out in the aircraft and helicopter parking area.

In addition, the SBU, together with the Defence Forces of Ukraine (SBS, the Defence Intelligence Directorate and others), struck the Yaroslavl oil refinery. A fire has been reported as a result of the attack on the refinery.

“The Security Service continues to systematically target military and strategic infrastructure facilities in the Russian Federation that support the war against Ukraine. Such special operations are a direct response to the enemy’s massive attacks on our country’s territory, during which Russia systematically uses missiles, attack drones and aviation to terrorise Ukrainians and destroy civilian infrastructure,” the statement said.

  • Earlier, Russian Telegram channels complained about fires at the airfield and at the refinery, while the aggressor’s defence ministry claimed that more than 600 drones had been neutralised.
