Radio Liberty’s film “Give Me Back My Name”, made by journalist Marian Kushnir, has been shortlisted for The AIBs awards of the International Broadcasting Association, in the “Domestic Affairs Documentary” category.
According to the description, the film is about how the bodies of fallen Ukrainian soldiers are returned. It is testimony to the scale of the grief Russia has inflicted and continues to inflict. It is an honest account of the immense work carried out by those who identify the dead and establish their names. The narrative begins on the battlefield and ends when the bodies of the fallen have been found, identified and returned to their families. The film explores the meaning of the term “missing in action” through specific stories of people suffering from uncertainty, including the story of a woman who, in the space of a single year, became a wife, a mother and a widow.
One of the film’s protagonists is Oleksii Yukov, head of the “Platsdarm” Association of Researchers of Military-Historical Heritage. Yukov was killed by Russians on 5 August 2026 on the line of contact.
The Ukrainian premiere took place on 10 February in Kyiv at the Zhovten cinema. The film is available to watch online.
In The AIBs competition, Marian Kushnir’s film will be up against six other contenders, including productions by BBC Breakfast, BBC Northern Ireland, Green Bean Media and others.
The winners will be announced at the AIB gala ceremony, which will take place in London on 20 November 2026.
