The RAM-2X strike drone from Ukrainian company Ukrspecsystems is equipped in its current version with a terminal guidance system that allows it to lock on to a target at a distance of up to 3km and continue the attack without further operator involvement. Ukrspecsystems deputy director Andriy Rymaruk told Defender Media.
“If the pilot locks on to a target from a distance of up to 3km, presses the ‘Attack’ button and then loses the link, the system will engage the target automatically. If it has latched on to the target, it will not let go, even if the target is moving,” Rymaruk explained.
One of the RAM-2X’s features is also visual navigation. It enables the drone to determine its own position in space without relying on GNSS satellite navigation. According to Rymaruk, this allows the UAV to operate in conditions where electronic warfare is being used, while the navigation system also makes the operator’s job easier.
Ukrspecsystems is also working on a fully autonomous version of the RAM-2X. Rymaruk noted that such a modification could appear as early as the end of 2026.
“A scenario where the crew will not be involved in every second of the flight: reconnaissance has identified a target, passed on the coordinates, and the aircraft sets off on an autonomous hunt,” he said.
In a comment to the outlet Militarnyy, Ukrspecsystems CEO Dmytro Khasapov said the company had for a long time not disclosed its involvement in producing the RAM for security reasons.
“We did not want to give our enemy a potential opportunity to find out what means is being used to strike them. In other words, we always think in terms of security, so as not to put our employees and their families at risk. But objectively, over the past several years of using this product, well, probably most people already know that it is Ukrspecsystems, so there was no longer any need to keep hiding it or to avoid speaking publicly that it is our product,” he explained.
The Ukrainian company Ukrspecsystems unveiled the RAM-2X strike UAV with an X-shaped wing at the MSPO defence exhibition in Poland in September this year. The company says the UAV was developed to engage high-value targets. Its stated operating range is up to 180km, endurance is more than two hours, and it carries a shaped-charge warhead weighing 2.7kg or 3.5kg.
According to the manufacturer, the RAM-2X works with various communications systems: multiple radio bands or Starlink. The drone can also operate paired with a relay platform — the SHARK-M reconnaissance drone — which provides target designation and helps overcome enemy electronic warfare. It is also stated that the UAV can use different models of AI assistants.
