American and Chinese officials have begun talks in New York to prepare a meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.
The world’s two largest economies are seeking to preserve and expand a fragile trade truce, Bloomberg reports.
The delegations were led by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese State Council Vice Premier He Lifeng. The talks are taking place in Manhattan. The agenda includes trade, investment, artificial intelligence, and the situation surrounding the war in Iran.
Next week, Trump will host Xi Jinping at the White House. It will be the Chinese leader’s first visit to Washington in more than ten years. The main focus of the meeting will be extending an agreement to reduce tariffs and export restrictions, which is due to expire in November. Both countries are already working to cut duties on US energy exports and agricultural products.
In addition, artificial intelligence has become a new source of tension between the two countries. The US accuses Chinese companies of copying American models to develop their own systems. Beijing rejects these allegations and is threatening retaliatory measures if Washington adopts restrictions against Chinese IT companies.
Despite this, the US side says it is ready for dialogue. White House officials stress that they want to discuss with China how to avoid shared risks in the field of artificial intelligence.
