In Sheptytskyi, Lviv Region, police detained a 36-year-old man who detonated a grenade during a confrontation with passers-by. Four people were injured in the blast.
This was reported by the Lviv Region police.
"On 26 September, a report was received on the 102 emergency line about an explosion that occurred on Taras Shevchenko Avenue in the city of Sheptytskyi. An investigative and operational team and officers from other units of the Sheptytskyi District Police Department were working at the scene, as well as explosives experts and officers from other police services in Lviv Region," the statement said.
Shrapnel wounds were sustained by three women aged 17, 18 and 56, and a 26-year-old man. All of them are local residents. The injured were taken to hospital and their lives are not in danger.
Law enforcement officers established that the grenade was detonated during a confrontation with passers-by by a 36-year-old resident of Sheptytskyi District. According to police, the man is a serviceman and was on leave at the time of the incident.
Police established his whereabouts and detained him in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
In connection with the incident, investigators opened criminal proceedings under Part 4 of Article 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — hooliganism involving the use of a weapon or another object specially adapted or prepared in advance to inflict bodily harm.
The article provides for a sentence of three to seven years’ imprisonment.
The pre-trial investigation is ongoing. In the near future, a court is to choose a preventive measure for the detainee.
