The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the National Police have detained two residents of the Lviv region suspected of carrying out a terror attack near the administrative building of the Stryi District Territorial Recruitment Centre on 17 September. A serviceman was seriously injured in the explosion.
This was reported by the SBU.
According to the investigation, two men drove up to the recruitment centre building in their own car. One of them threw a homemade explosive device out of the car window in a car park near the military enlistment office. They then left the scene.
Later, a serviceman from the recruitment centre triggered its detonation while inspecting the explosive. As a result of the blast, he sustained serious injuries.
Law enforcement officers detained the suspects “hot on the trail”. They were identified as two residents of Mykolaiv district in the Lviv region, aged 48 and 41.
During a search of one of the suspects’ home, officers found two more homemade explosive devices. They were seized and sent for forensic examination.
SBU investigators served the men with a notice of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – committing a terrorist act by prior conspiracy by a group of persons.
The investigation is ongoing. Law enforcement officers are establishing all the circumstances of the crime, including checking the possible involvement of the detainees in cooperation with Russian special services.
The operation was carried out by SBU officers in the Lviv region together with the National Police, under the procedural supervision of the Lviv Specialised Prosecutor’s Office in the field of defence of the Western Region.
