Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has responded to the strike by two Russian drones on a civilian vessel carrying maize and owned by Turkey.
The head of state wrote about it on his social media.
“A horrific strike by two Russian drones on a civilian vessel in neutral waters, which was carrying maize and belonged to Turkey. On board were citizens of Azerbaijan and India,” Zelensky wrote.
As a result of the attack, the ship’s captain was killed, and the fate of one other person is being clarified. Eleven crew members were rescued, one of whom was injured.
“As of now, unfortunately, it is known that the ship’s captain has been killed. My condolences. The fate of one other person is being clarified. Eleven crew members were rescued, one of them injured,” the president noted.
Zelensky also said that Ukraine has repeatedly proposed concrete steps to de-escalate and guarantee security in the Black Sea. According to him, relevant proposals have also come from third countries.
“But Russia consistently chooses terror and the sinking of civilian vessels instead of normal navigation. Pressure is needed to restore global food security. And everyone who is genuinely interested in this must help,” the president stressed.
- It was reported earlier that on the morning of 5 October, a UAV attacked the Turkish vessel Royad Mammadov in the Black Sea near the Romanian coast. Initially, Romania’s maritime authority reported 13 missing crew members and the captain injured. Later, the country’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said that 11 crew members had been rescued. There has been one fatality.
