Moldova is setting up protective zones at border checkpoints with Ukraine so that, in the event of a drone attack, staff and members of the public can take shelter in a safe place.
Interior Minister Daniella Misail-Nichitin said this, NewsMaker reports.
According to her, the Moldovan authorities are trying to provide all border police posts with the necessary protective equipment, including those located on Ukrainian territory.
“We are also discussing withdrawing Moldovan staff onto our territory. They have already been withdrawn from two checkpoints, and we will withdraw the others from the joint posts located on Ukrainian territory as well. They will work on Moldovan territory,” the minister said.
Moldova’s Interior Ministry clarified, that this concerns the joint border posts “Criva” and “Palanca”.
The official noted that work to create the protective zones is currently under way. They are intended to allow border police officers, officials and members of the public at the checkpoints to evacuate to a safe place in the event of a threat.
The minister also spoke about the condition of the Moldovan border guard who was injured when a shell fell at the “Palanca” checkpoint. According to her, his condition is stable; he is in hospital, but his life is not in danger.
