The United Kingdom will continue to put pressure on Russia through sanctions after US President Donald Trump announced a deal to purchase Russian diesel fuel.
The Independent reports this.
On Friday, Trump said an agreement had been reached to buy more than one million tonnes of diesel fuel from Russia.
Commenting on the statement, a UK government spokesperson stressed that London’s position remains clear.
"We will continue to work closely with international partners to provide Ukraine with the military and financial support it needs for self-defence. We will also continue to put pressure on Russia through the toughest sanctions regime ever applied by the United Kingdom, raising the cost of Putin’s aggression and supporting efforts aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace," the government representative said.
Context
- On the evening of 9 October, President Trump said he had reached an agreement with Putin on supplying Russian diesel fuel to the American and global markets.
- According to him, Russia will "immediately" deliver more than 300,000 tonnes of fuel, a further 500,000 tonnes during November, and 1 million tonnes straight after that.
- Zelenskyy said that any easing of sanctions against Russia without a clear and lasting de-escalation agreement is an obvious sign of weakness, and Russia will inflict even greater damage and losses on the world.
