On the night of 1 November, demonstrations were held in the Swiss cities of Zurich and Basel, escalating into clashes with police. Protesters set fire to barricades and rubbish bins and threw stones, bottles and pyrotechnics at officers.

This is reported by Swiss broadcaster SRF.

In Zurich, several hundred people took to the streets. Participants set fire to barricades and rubbish bins and pelted officers with stones, bottles and pyrotechnics. To disperse the demonstrators, police used water cannon and rubber bullets.

In Basel, around 150 protesters marched through the city centre. Barricades were also set alight there. Road closures temporarily brought public transport to a halt.

The actions are being linked to a wave of youth protests in France and Germany. Calls to take to the streets spread on social media under the slogans "GenZ regelt" and "We’re fed up too – in Switzerland".

  • In France, during the third wave of protests, police detained 511 people on 31 October. In Paris, Marseille and other cities, clashes broke out between police and rioters after peaceful demonstrations.
  • In Germany, following youth demonstrations, police used water cannon and pepper spray. In Frankfurt, at least two shops were looted, and in Cologne and Berlin police also clashed with rioters.
