On 31 July, the state energy generating company Tsentrenerho said that it signed a contract on US coal import with Xcoal Energy and Resources.
The company said on its website that the contract was signed back on 14 July in line with the agreements reached during President Petro Poroshenko's visit to the USA.
Under the contract, Tsentrenerho expects to receive 700,000 t of US coal by the year-end. The first ship with 85,000 t of coal is expected to arrive at the Pivdennyy port in early September.
The entire volume of coal will be sent to the Trypillya cogeneration plant in Kyiv Region, which would allow it to resume operation and ensure its smooth transition through the autumn-winter period.
President Poroshenko said after the visit to the USA that according to preliminary agreements, Ukraine would buy 2m t of American coal.
