Scoop of the weekend: hopes for "optimistic" coronavirus scenario

There were 2,777 coronavirus cases in Ukraine by the morning of 12 April, including 83 lethal ones and 89 recoveries, the Health Ministry has said.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has promised a reward of 1m dollars to Ukrainian scientists if they invent a coronavirus medicine or vaccine, Chief Sanitarian Doctor Viktor Lyashko has said in an interview with LB.ua.

According to Lyashko, the Covid-19 coronavirus in Ukraine is spreading in line with an optimistic scenario, under which not more than 2% of the population is expected to get infected. He warned that if the rate reaches 10%, the health care system will collapse.

A 73-year-old archimandrite of Kyiv's Pechersk Lavra monastery, Nektariy (Oleksandr Kovalenko), died of coronavirus. At least 30 people in the monastery were reported infected.

The Kyiv police said that it would monitor the observance of quarantine rules in popular public places using drones.

The Antonov An-225 Mriya, a strategic airlift cargo aircraft, has departed on its first flight after an 18-month break, which was necessary for technical maintenance and upgrade. The giant plane will help deliver medical goods from China to Europe.

The National Opera House of Ukraine with support from the Culture Ministry, the Italian embassy and the Italian Culture Institute in Ukraine is launching an online project in support of Italy under #LaCulturaNonSiFerma. Every week during a month it will present a video filmed by its artists with their smartphones. This week this will be "Va pensiero", a famous chorus from Verdi's Nabucco.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has visited the disengagement area near the villages of Bohdanivka and Petrivske in Volnovakha District of Donetsk Region. "I am glad that the disengagement helped to decrease the shooting. We see the results. Servicemen see the results. We are working on agreeing new areas and on bringing peace to Donbas," he said.

Chornovil's case

Ex-President Petro Poroshenko has condemned the criminal case against Euromaydan activist and ex-MP Tetyana Chornovil as "kangaroo court" of all participants of the Revolution of Dignity. He also accused the State Investigation Bureau of lying about the deadly events on 18 February 2014.

Chornobyl fire

The fire that has been raging in the Chornobyl exclusion zone for over a week has caused damages running into dozens of millions of hryvnyas, according to the State Agency for Exclusion Zone Management. She said the reasons for the fire included a fire that spread from a natural reserve in Zhytomyr Region, a short circuit of transmission lines and arsons.
