Russian troops attacked the Serpent (Zmiyinyy) Island from the sea. The occupiers fired the ship guns. Border guards and the Armed Forces are defending it, the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported.
"Currently, there are two ships of the Russian Black Sea Fleet "Moscow" and "Vasily Bykov" near the island," the statement said.
Update from 6 P.M.
The Border Guard Service reported that aircraft had joined the attack.
"The aggressor used air force against border guards and soldiers of the Armed Forces on the island of Zmiyinyy. The shelling of the island from ship guns is also continuing.
Earlier in the morning, occupiers issued threat demands to the Ukrainian frontier guards to surrender. The aggressor used an international channel of communication for the safety of navigation.
Zmiyinyy is an island in the Black Sea, a part of the Kiliya district of the Odesa region.
