Prosecutor General Irina Venediktova clarified the information about the release from custody of some prisoners to participate the defense of the state. She stressed that this is not a mass action, but a very balanced and targeted step.
"To put it simply, the citizens should not worry about the fact that crime will flood the streets. And those who are serving their sentences should not hope for an" open day ",- said Venediktova.
The Prosecutor General noted that each of the released prisoner has significant combat experience in the anti-terrorist operation zone in 2014-2015.
"All of them are fierce opponents of the Russian world, and one of them is the author of a well-known song by Ukrainian fans about the main aggressor. All risks are individually assessed and the control mechanisms are identified," - Venediktova said.
"There are enough soldiers in the country - almost 100,000 citizens have been mobilized in two days, half of them are terror defense reservists. However, defending the Motherland is not only a duty, but also a right. And when it comes to preserving statehood and the future of the country, we believe that those who stumbled, but want to help defend their homeland, deserved this chance. In addition, we are convinced that the main task of the penitentiary system, not punishment, but correction, " said the head of the Prosecutor General's Office.
The day before, Venediktova announced on the air of TV channel “Ukraine 24” that Ukraine was releasing fighters who were in custody, on the spot - those who would defend the state but not use weapons against their citizens. However, she did not say names, noting that some of them appears in media. "I don't want to name the units either, because they have different reputations," Venediktova said.
