Russian troops fired on the Assumption Sviatohorsk Lavra

The premises where the monks and refugees live were damaged.

On 12 March 2022, during the battle in Sviatohorsk, the premises of the Assumption Sviatogorsk Lavra in the Donetsk region were damaged.

This was reported by the Information and Education Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

On 12 March 2022, in the Sviatohorsk Lavra, there was a bomb explosion near the monastery during shelling in the city. The blast wave damaged the premises of the Lavra, where the monks and many refugees lived," according to the statement.

Almost all the windows were broken, and church buildings were damaged to a different degree.

A UOC-MP monastery (Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate) oversees the Sviatogorsk Lavra.

The monastery is located on the high right bank of the Siversky Donets river (the so-called Sviati Hory). In addition to terrestrial buildings, it has cretaceous caves. The relics of St. John the Hermit of Sviatohorsk are kept in the monastery. The monastery was first mentioned in the 16th century. However, some chronicles say that Christian settlements in these areas appeared in the 12th century.
