Russia has refused to negotiate a peace treaty with Japan

In the current context, the Russian Federation does not intend to continue negotiations on a peace treaty with Japan, which was not signed after the Second World War.

This was announced on 21 March at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

The Russian Ministry blamed official Tokyo for the damage to cooperation with Russia and the interests of Japan itself.

According to a statement from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Russia is blocking Japan's status as a Black Sea Economic Cooperation partner in the sectoral dialogue.

Russia also suspends visa-free travel of Japanese citizens to the Kuril Islands.

"It was decided to suspend visa-free travel for Japanese citizens on the basis of visa-free exchange agreements between the southern Kuril Islands of the Russian Federation and Japan in 1991, and to make it as easy as possible for former Japanese residents of the southern Kuril Islands to visit their former residences since 1999." statement says.

Earlier, Japan expanded sanctions against Russia over the invasion of Ukraine, blacklisting 15 representatives of Russian ministries and 9 Russian state-owned companies and organizations.

On 7 March, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that the South Kuril Islands were the sovereign territory of his state. These territories were occupied by Russia in 1945, after World War II and still under Russian control.

On 28 February, during a debate in the Japanese parliament, Hideki Uyama, director of the European Department of the Japanese Ministry of foreign Affairs, said that Russia had occupied the southern part of the Kuril Islands, which is contrary to international law, as well as the attack on Ukraine.
