The occupiers store hundreds of tonnes of ammunition in Chornobyl

Ukraine demands the UN Security Council to send a special mission to the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant zone.

The occupiers store hundreds of tonnes of ammunition in Chornobyl

Russian forces keep transporting and storing a significant volume of ammunition close to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (CNPP), in blatant disregard of the danger of damaging the confinement structure around the fourth reactor, informed the Minister of the Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories Iryna Vereshuk.

"Every day, russian occupiers transport dozens of tonnes of rocket projectiles, artillery, and mortar ammunition through the town of Prypiat, several hundred meters from the nuclear confinement structures. They store the ammunition in the neighboring town of Chornobyl, also in proximity to the Nuclear Power Plant. Hundreds of tonnes of projectiles are now in Chornobyl," she stressed.

The occupiers use outdated ammunition that can detonate during transport or loading. The occupiers' actions caused massive wildfires in the Chornobyl isolation zone. Since this territory is occupied, no one can put out the fires.

"Burning releases radionuclides into the air that the wind can carry across significant distances, which presents a radioactivity threat for Ukraine and other European countries. Losing control over the isolation zone and not being able to put out the wildfires endangers the radioactive objects on this territory," she added.
