Latvia and Ukraine will cooperate in the investigation of crimes related to the russian invasion

If persons which are suspected of committing crimes are identified, countries will provide the prosecution on the territory, where such crime was committed.

On March 27, General Prosecutors of Latvia Yurius Stukas and Ukraine Iryna Venedictova signed the memorandum of cooperation in the investigation of committed crimes related to armed conflicts.

General prosecutors agreed that both countries will provide full assistance in any criminal proceedings for crimes of the Russian war against Ukraine and crimes against humanity, military crimes, aggression and genocide.

According to the memorandum, Latvia and Ukraine will collect, record and exchange evidence of a violation of international humanitarian law.

If sides during an investigation will define people who have committed a crime during the war in Ukraine or any other international conflict, then they will provide the prosecution on the territory where such crime was committed.

Iryna Venedictova reported that in cooperation with the General Prosecutor of Latvia Nida Grunskene and the Minister of Justice of Poland Zbigniew Ziobro they had developed the first common investigation group. According to Venedictova, this group will “investigate the crimes committed by the representatives of the criminal regime of the Russian Federation”.

According to the general prosecutor, six countries have started the investigation of war crimes of Russia in Ukraine. These are Estonia, Lithuania, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden.
