Rafael Mariano Grossi, the IAEA General Director, has arrived in Ukraine to take part in discussions about the IAEA's planned emergency technical support to ensure the safety and security of the country's nuclear facilities and prevent the risk of an accident that could threaten people and the environment. The press service of this organization informed about this.
Grossi planned to initiate operational support for Ukraine's nuclear facilities in relation to security and protection. This support includes sending of IAEA experts to priority areas and providing of vital security equipment, including monitoring and emergency equipment.
"The military activities put Ukraine's nuclear power plants and other facilities with radioactive materials in unexampled danger. We should take urgent measures to ensure their continued safe operation and reduce the risk of a nuclear accident that could have serious consequences for human health and the environment. both in Ukraine and abroad”, the IAEA chief said.
During his visit, he will also visit one of Ukraine's nuclear power plants.
"Ukraine has applied to us for security support. We will start delivering it now. Ukraine has one of Europe's largest nuclear energy programs. The IAEA's presence where security is needed is very important. We are now ready to provide the necessary support. ", - he said.
