Ukraine demands the removal or suspension of IAEA’s Russian representatives

Verkhovna Rada web site published an appeal to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in which they urged to remove or at least suspend Russian representatives from IAEA.

“The main reason for it is nuclear terrorism, which Russian occupiers conduct by capturing Ukrainian nuclear power plants. Russia has neglected to comply with international norms of nuclear and radiation safety by committing such unprecedented actions as capturing Chornobyl and Zaporizhzhia NPPs, damaging by shelling the subcritical nuclear assembly of the National Science Centre "Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology", the statement says.

Parliament believes that currently, IAEA, as an influential and professional organization, conducts only “consulting and forecasting the radiation situation in case of the nuclear catastrophe in Ukraine.” When they should “react radically to the aggressive, terrorist military actions of the Russians towards the civilian nuclear energy objects of Ukraine.”

The representatives of the Verkhovna Rada Energy Committee appealed to the agency with a demand to take all the necessary urgent measures to ensure the nuclear safety and protection of the Chornobyl and Zaporizhzhia NPPs, and the subcritical nuclear assembly of the National Science Centre "Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology.

“We ask IAEA’s governing bodies to take into consideration the decision of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe and CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) and do not be influenced in making further decisions on the Russian representatives’ membership in the organization,” the statement says.

Earlier, CERN suspended Russia’s status as the monitor. Also, the organization will not participate in the new collaboration projects with the Russian Federation.
