Kuleba on new sanctions: 10 new hits on the russian economy

Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba explained the details of the new sanctions package imposed on the russian federation on his Facebook page.

"Substantial diplomatic achievement and of great credit to the negotiators on the new wave of sanctions. It is powerful, it is economic warfare. Many of the new sanctions are precisely what Ukraine has been pressuring for", - the Minister said.

Dmytro Kuleba noted that President Zelenskyy gave multiple speeches, addressing partners on the importance of new sanctions with the real and unprecedented impact.

"As I spoke with many of our partners, I expressed my gratitude for all the work done so far, but the war is not over yet, and that’s why a new package of sanctions was so much needed. We are done with half-measures and explanations on bottlenecks and blocking points for Ukraine and Europe. When the fate of the whole next century depends on how we act now, only hypocrites can think about their private business interests. So here are 10 new hits on the russian economy, its financial system, and international trade that have been imposed over the last three days", - he said.

The list goes as following:

  1. The United States and the United Kingdom in coordination with the G7 and European Union banned all new investments in russia

  2. The United States, the European Union and the G7 have imposed the "full blocking" sanctions on russia's largest financial institution, Sberbank, and its largest private bank, Alfa Bank. In total, the United States have already blocked two-thirds of russia's banking sector;

  3. The new sanctions target Putin's daughters, Lavrov's daughter and wife, Mishustin (the russian Prime Minister, whose name you should not ever bother to remember), and loser Dmitry Medvedev, who recently wrote an article about russia plans on "changing the consciousness" of Ukrainian people with the use of military force, a number of Members of the Security Council of russia;

  4. The UK freezes assets of the Moscow Credit Bank and imposed sanctions against the oligarchs Rothenberg and Michelson;

  5. 18 countries (Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Greece, Portugal, Estonia, Latvia, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, Macedonia, Luxembourg, Italy, Germany, France, Sweden, Denmark) together expelled 318 (!) russian "diplomats";

  6. The Netherlands arrested 14 yachts owned by the russian citizens;

  7. Denmark froze the assets of the russian citizens in the amount of 11.8 million dollars;

  8. The US Treasury Department blocked the russian government from making sovereign debt payments using dollars held at American banks, a move that greatly ramps up financial pressure on russia by depleting its dollar reserves and brings the country closer to a potential default;

  9. The United States will apply a full blocking sanctions on critical major russian state-owned enterprises, the list will be published tomorrow (these will be big blows);

  10. We managed to improve the fifth package of the EU sanctions package: import ban on coal from Russia worth 4 billion euros per year; a full transaction ban on four key Russian banks, among them VTB (23% of the banking sector); a ban on russian ships entering EU ports; a ban on russian and Belarusian road transport operators, which will severely limit the ability of russian industry player to supply key goods; further targeted export bans, worth EUR 10 billion, in areas in which russia is vulnerable (quantum computers and advanced semiconductors, sensitive machinery and transportation equipment).

“We are immensely grateful to our partners for these decisions. However, in order to prevent new atrocities as we have seen in Bucha, we shall not stop. Great diplomatic battles continue. The negotiations regarding a full oil, gas and coal embargo continue (we are already winning on coal, we are fighting for oil). Ban on russian ships and goods entering international ports (we have first win in the EU, there will be more). We continue to demand for all russian banks to be removed from SWIFT”, - the Minister said.

"That’s pretty much it for today. And tomorrow we will do our best to kick russia off the UN Human Rights Council. Last night Ukraine and its partners submitted a resolution to the UN General Assembly to suspend russia's rights of membership in the Human Rights Council. Step by step we are punishing russian murderers. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are fighting on the ground, diplomats are fighting on the diplomatic arena", - Kuleba added.

The United States is also trying to put russia in a situation when it will have to choose between a default or draining of its remaining foreign currency reserves.
