Czech Republic is the only candidate to replace russia in UN Human Rights Council

On May 10, the UN General Assembly will vote on which country will replace russia in the UN Human Rights Council, the Associated Press reports.

As the Council seats are divided between the regional groups, an Eastern European country must replace russia.

The General Assembly spokesperson Paulina Kubiak announced that the Czech Republic was the only candidate for the seat.

The UN Human Rights Council is an international human rights body in the UN system. It was established in 2006 on the ground of the Commission on Human Rights, which has been operating since 1946.

On April 7, the UN General Assembly suspended russia’s participation in the UN Human Rights Council. The reason for the resolution was gross human rights violations in the city of Bucha in the Kyiv region.

On March 16, russia was expelled from the Council of Europe. Withdrawal from this organization denounces the European Convention on Human Rights.

On April 23, it became known that the Czech Republic had applied to replace Russia in this body.
