The European Parliament has called on former Foreign Minister Karin Kneisl and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder to resign from russian companies. Otherwise, sanctions will be imposed on them.

This was reported by Der Standard with reference to a resolution of the European Parliament.

Kneisl and Schroeder are members of the board of the russian oil company Rosneft.

It is noted that the decision of the European Parliament is not binding, but it will obviously increase the pressure on the leadership of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and Josep Borrel, who are developing sanctions lists.

If passed, the assets of two former leading German politicians might be frozen.

Earlier, Spiegel reported, citing a relevant order, that Germany's coalition had agreed to strip Schroeder of the chancellor's privileges because of his ties to russia.

In 2018, Karin Kneisl invited russian president vladimir putin to her wedding, who arrived with the Kuban State Cossack Choir. A scandal erupted in Austria, and Michel Raymond, a member of the European Parliament from Austria and a member of the Greens - European Free Alliance faction, asked Kneisl to resign.

In March 2021, Kneisl was nominated for a position at the russian company Rosneft.

Rosneft's board of directors also includes Schroeder, who is considered a longtime friend of the russian president. He also actively lobbied for the construction of russia's Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline.
