According to Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, the European Union's embargo on russian oil will be painful for members of the bloc as well as for moscow.

CNN quoted the chancellor as saying this before an extraordinary meeting of the European Council in Brussels.

"The decision to impose an oil embargo is a measure that will certainly be painful for member states," Nehammer said.

"But we have to be realistic, the pain we are enduring is nothing compared to what the Ukrainian people are going through," he added.

At night, the EU agreed on anti-russian sanctions, which will be part of the sixth package of restrictions. It was decided to ban more than 2/3 of oil imports from russia. This is oil delivered by sea. The original plan, submitted as early as May 4, included a ban on imports not only by sea but also through the "Druzhba" pipeline.

Other restrictions include:

  • disconnecting russia's largest bank, "Sberbank", from the international interbank payment system SWIFT,

  • blocking the broadcasting of three russian state broadcasters in the EU,

  • expanding the list of russian sub-sanctioned individuals responsible for war crimes in Ukraine.

The sanctions must now be agreed upon by all 27 member states and approved by the European Council.
