The russian Su-30 shot a Kh-31 cruise missile in the direction of Ukraine's Odesa Region at around 10 a.m. on 8 July. The missile exploded over the Black Sea, the spokesman for the Odesa regional military administration, Serhiy Bratchuk, said on Telegram.
The Odesa city council suggested that the detonation near the coastline may be a conscious tactic aimed "at inflicting mass fragmentation damage in the areas where people cluster on the coastline".
The Odesa authorities have been calling on local residents to avoid visiting the beaches and swimming in the sea due to the threat of shelling and mine detonation.
