The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has carried out anti-terrorist measures in Uman (Cherkasy Region) on the eve of Rosh Hashanah and the arrival of a large number of pilgrims.
According to its press service, these activities are being held on the territory of an unfinished facility at the historical and cultural centre named after Rabbi Nachman with an objective to strengthen and practice a rapid response to possible threats.
Regional units of the National Police, the National Guard, the State Emergency Service and
to apprehend a suspected "terrorist group" and secure a release of "hostages".
Despite the enhanced security measures, both the SBU and the National Police asked the pilgrims to refrain from visiting Ukraine this year. According to the SBU, Russia may use crowds of pilgrims to stage provocations.
Earlier, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry made a similar appeal to the pilgrims.
Hasidim go to Uman to celebrate the Jewish New Year. As of 5 August, nearly half a thousand believers had already arrived in Uman.
