President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has commented on the decision of the Dutch court to convict three people of the downing of flight MH17 in the sky over Donetsk Region in July 2014.

He called this decision important, but added that the masterminds must be punished too.

"It is necessary to bring to justice those who ordered it, because the feeling of impunity leads to new crimes. We must dispel this illusion," he emphasized.

The president added that punishment for all atrocities - both past and present - was inevitable.

Today, the Dutch court handling the trial found Igor Girkin, Sergey Dubinsky and Leonid Kharchenko guilty of mass murder over their involvement in the downing of the MH17 flight Amsterdam - Kuala Lumpur. They were sentenced to life imprisonment in absentia and will have to pay 16 million euros in compensation to the families of the victims.

These persons were found guilty of delivering a Buk missile system from Russia to separatist-controlled Donetsk Region and shooting down an aircraft with 298 people on board. The system was intended to shoot down military aircraft, but it was used against a civilian flight. After that, the militants took the Buk back to Russia.
