The Ukrainian Ombudsman's Office has met families of defenders captive from Serpent Island
held by Russia.
"Families express deep concern over the impasse in repatriating prisoners of war from both sides. Consequently, they raised numerous inquiries to the ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) regarding visitations to the Ukrainian soldiers' places of detention, their well-being, provision of warm clothing, and other humanitarian assistance," stated the release.
Furthermore, relatives affirmed their readiness to engage various international bodies and other nations to expedite the return of Ukrainian defenders.
Oleksandr Kononenko, the Ombudsman's representative in the security and defense sector, shared that Ukraine has established joint medical committees to aid in the release of Ukrainian prisoners. However, for this mechanism to function effectively, cooperation from the opposing side is essential.
Ukrainian efforts to repatriate defenders face challenges due to Russia's apparent reluctance to repatriate even its own citizens.
"The efforts persist and will persist until all Ukrainian soldiers are safely returned home," emphasized the Ombudsman's Office.
Last week, the Ministry for the Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories disclosed that Russia currently holds 4,337 Ukrainians captive, the majority being military personnel.
