President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has commented on the decision of EU leaders who, at a summit in Brussels, have now endorsed the European Commission's recommendation to open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova.

In a tweet on X, Zelenskyy said: "Ukraine's victory. A victory for the whole of Europe. A victory that motivates, inspires and gives strength."

He also congratulated his Moldovan counterpart Maia Sandu.

"I thank everyone who worked for this decision, I thank everyone who helped. I congratulate every Ukrainian man and woman. I congratulate the whole of Moldova and you personally, Maia. History is made by those who do not get tired of fighting for freedom," Zelenskyy said.

Despite Hungary's position, on 14 December, EU leaders decided to open accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova.

At the time of the vote, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban left the room. Thus, 26 EU leaders voted for the historic decision.
