During the strikes on Velyka Pysarivka in Sumy Region, the Russians used the ODAB-1500 heavy bomb for the first time in Ukraine. This is the first time that Russia has used a one-and-a-half tonne thermobaric bomb from the Soviet era, Bild writes, citing German journalist Julian Röpke.
According to him, the ODAB-1500 was used for the first time since the full-scale invasion. The bomb was dropped on Velyka Pysarivka, which suffered heavy damage. After the impact, a column of smoke rose into the sky, about a kilometre high.
The ODAB-1500 (volume-detonating aerial bomb) is a thermobaric projectile from the Soviet era. It releases a liquid in the form of an aerosol 10 metres before the target and ignites it. This is called a volumetric explosion. Obviously, the ODAB has a greater destructive power.
"Röpke called the use of a 1.5-tonne bomb in the village 'a new low in Russia's war against Ukrainian cities'," the website said.
