Rutte: Ukraine's right to defend itself doesn't end at its borders, shooting down Russian fighter could help

However, the NATO Secretary General said that the authorisation of such strikes does not depend on the Alliance, but on each member state.

The new NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has supported Ukraine's right to strike military targets in Russia.

At a briefing in Kyiv, he said that Ukraine has the right to defend itself. This right does not end at its borders.

‘Russia is waging an illegal war, and that means that shooting down Russian fighter jets and missiles before they are used against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure can help,’ Rutte said.

At the same time, he added that each NATO country has the right to decide for itself how to support Ukraine.

‘Some issues, such as restrictions, are beyond NATO's control,’ Rutte said.
