The Biden administration will announce in the coming days what is likely to be the last military aid package to Ukraine under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), Reuters reports, citing two sources familiar with the matter.

According to a third source, the package includes air defence interceptor missiles and artillery ammunition, but the exact contents are expected to be announced in the coming days.

The package is valued at around $1.2 billion.

Under the programme, military equipment is purchased from the defence industry or partners rather than being taken from US stockpiles, meaning it can take months or years to arrive on the battlefield.

The USAI package could be one of the last steps the United States takes to provide direct military support to Ukraine as Kyiv prepares for the return of President-elect Donald Trump, who has publicly questioned military aid and pledged to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office on 20 January.

Since the war broke out, the United States has provided $175 billion in aid to Ukraine, including approximately $61.4 billion in security assistance.

About half of this security assistance has come through the USAI programme, while the rest has been drawn from existing military stockpiles through presidential authority.

The publication notes that the president still has $5.6 billion of this amount at his disposal.

The Biden administration recently announced that its military assistance to Ukraine will last until the end of 2025. The State Department made this statement amid reports that US President-elect Trump may reduce aid to Ukraine after his inauguration.
