Sybiha on European Council meeting: we expect new strong steps by EU to support Ukraine

‘The involvement of the United States is critical and crucial to the success of peace efforts,’ the minister said.

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha expects ‘strong steps’ by the EU at tomorrow's European Council meeting.

The minister wrote about this on his page on X.

‘Tomorrow's special meeting of the European Council will be a historic moment for strategic defence and Europe's global role. We expect new strong steps by the EU to support Ukraine, which will strengthen our soldiers, increase our defence capabilities and scale up our defence industry,’ Sybiha wrote.

The foreign minister noted that ‘decisive steps by the EU, together with increased pressure on Russia, can put Ukraine in a stronger position and bring a just peace closer’ and added that ‘a Ukraine with guaranteed security will become a key force for lasting peace and development for Europe.’

‘Peace is our number one priority. Ukraine strives for a just and lasting peace more than anyone else in the world. We continue to work with all our partners to achieve this goal. The involvement of the United States is critical and crucial to the success of peace efforts,’ the minister said.

  • On the same day, Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that a meeting between the Ukrainian and US teams was being prepared.
  • At the meeting on 6 March, EU member states are to support the position that Ukraine and Europe should be involved in negotiations with Russia. This became known from a draft communiqué.
