According to the petition, the initiative was prompted by the destruction caused by Russia during another massive missile and drone attack on the night of 15 June, in particular the damage inflicted on the Cathedral of the Dormition at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.

“We, representatives of Ukrainian and French civil society, demand the immediate expulsion of the Russian Federation from UNESCO and other international organisations founded on respect for international law, human rights and the protection of cultural heritage,” the text states.

“Maintaining Russia’s membership in such organisations, despite its systematic violation of international obligations, undermines their authority, jeopardises their mission and sets a dangerous precedent of impunity.

We call on governments, European institutions, international organisations and citizens to support this demand and uphold the fundamental principles of international law.”

The petition has already gathered more than 1,000 signatures.
