An unidentified drone entered Bulgarian airspace from Romania on the morning of 8 August and crashed about 100 meters from the shared border of the two NATO member states.
Prime Minister Rumen Radev said this was the first such incident on the country’s territory, Bloomberg reports.
The drone crashed into a sunflower field near a compressor station on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline, which connects Turkey and Ukraine. Bulgarian, Romanian, and NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre radars did not detect it.
Specialists are currently determining the type of drone. No one was injured in the crash, and there was no damage to buildings.
Law enforcement and the military have already cordoned off and isolated the area. Radev stressed that it was not an amateur drone, but a device carrying a substantial amount of explosives.
Romania’s Ministry of Defence said its radars did not register any aerial targets that could have been moving toward Bulgaria.
